HATCH was made as part of the DC 48 Hour  Film Project, April 29th-May 1st 2005. The  48HFP is an annual multi-city competition where  filmmakers are given two days to write, shoot,  soundtrack, and edit a four to seven minute film.  HATCH was selected for the "Best of the  48HFP" (top 15 films) and won Best Locations!

At 7pm Friday evening filmmakers attend a  kickoff meeting where they pull their team's  required genre out of a hat. Each city is also  assigned a character, prop, and line of dialogue  that must appear in each team's film. The films  must be turned in by 7:30pm on Sunday evening  to be eligible for awards.

Our required elements for this year were:

  • Genre: Horror
  • Character: R. Moellering, Hypochondriac
  • Prop: Bottle of wine
  • Line of Dialogue:
"It was like that when I got here."

HATCH was filmed entirely on location in
Washington, DC aboard the vessel the
 Badtz Maru
. Total running time: 7:38.

The Cavegirl/Defekt Productions film team also participated in 48HFPs sister competition, the National Film Challenge, in October 2004. Their entry, FELT: Tearing the Fabric of America, made the top ten and was awarded Best Mockumentary.

Cavegirl/Defekt's first film endeavour was APERTURE, made for the 2004 DC 48 Hour Film Project.
